How do I maintain my Portable Air Conditioning?

Portable air conditioners can sound surprisingly demanding to maintain. Problems are quick to arise without routine and informed maintenance. Appropriate maintenance enables optimal efficiency and allows you to enjoy the comfort of a portable air conditioner during the summer months, minimising the risk of breakdowns or the need for expensive repairs. We believe preventive maintenance saves money in the long run.

1. Consistently Wash and Maintain Nylon Filters
A crucial tip in the upkeep of a portable air conditioner is to always keep maintain the filters. Filters are the heart of the unit and are extremely important to the quality of your cooling experience.
Luckily, our nylon filters are fully washable and can be used repeatedly after wash. Simply rinse the filter in warm water with mild detergent. You may want to use a brush to remove any dust or dirt. Later, leave to air dry before returning to the unit. Please note not to force dry the filters.

We recommend cleaning filters at least every two weeks.

2. Clean the grill and louvre
An obvious area to clean easily is the grill and louvre.  Use a soft brush or dry cloth to remove dust particles.

3. Ensure the Unit’s Condenser Coils Are Clean
Unlike the filters, overheating due to dirty condenser coils can cause headaches and be extremely costly. You may be better off replacing a unit rather than replacing its coils.
Carefully cleaning the condenser coils, ideally before and after each season, with coil cleaner solution to remove grease and dirt buildup. This will ensure the coils remain working healthily for a long time.

Coil cleaner solution can be purchased at ecoair.org.

4. Keep the Exhaust Hose Straight and Short
A very simple but often taken for granted tip is to ensure that the portable air conditioner exhaust hose is straight and as short as possible and limited to the maximum length specified in the instruction manual.
This maximises both efficiency and cooling inside a room. This also minimises moisture build up inside the hose and risk of overheating problems in the air conditioner itself, typically overheating or compressor failure. Making this small adjustment can cause immediate results in the performance of your air conditioner.

5. Always Keep Your Portable Air Conditioning Upright
Very important to always remember that the portable air conditioner must always be kept upright, never place it on its sides or upside down as this will damage the air conditioner and sadly if left in these positions for prolonged period of time it will most likely be beyond repair.

6. Use Portable Air Conditioning in a Clean and Safe Environment
Always use and place your unit in a clean environment away from direct sunlight with the doors closed. Placement of your Portable Air Conditioner is key to whether it can function properly. Dirty or dusty rooms can damage and clog up the unit and its internal parts. This is also true for humid areas which cause moisture to build up.
You should never use a portable air conditioner in very hot rooms for long periods of time, always follow the manual instruction and observe the operating temperature range. Turning off unnecessary heat sources in the room can help the air conditioning to perform more efficiently.

We often only realize the importance of a portable air conditioner during the summer months. Sometimes, we tend to take our air conditioning unit for granted especially during winter. However, routine maintenance is the only way to ensure the longevity of your portable air conditioner. The tips above are essential things you can do to ensure that your unit will remain in prime shape for the next summer season.
